Web Series: Ouisurf Kooks & Hurricanes

Web Series: Ouisurf Kooks & Hurricanes

Ouisurf is back for another surf adventures. In Kooks & Hurricanes, they teamed up with Honda to travel to northern coasts. In these 3 episodes, they show us amazing surf spots in not so familiar places: Maine, British-Columbia and Rhode Island.

I graded the three episodes on Resolve in my studio following a very different path than what I had done with the previous tv series. Guys wanted to have a more East Coast vibe, more earthy.

I went for some very vibrant greenish blues that really represented how cold the water was. Contrast and sharpness were pushed on portraits the give back some details in the skin tones that fell right in the complementary colors of the water.

The Tofino episodes was darker but full of nice greens brought by the wet forest sections. I really was a fun to bring out the life in the trees and the wooden house.

Here are two episodes:

Color grading demo 2015

Color grading demo 2015

This is my color grading demo put together from bits of feature, shorts, commercials, music videos and tv series projects I graded in 2015 in DaVinci Resolve, Mistika and Speedgrade.

This demo doesn’t contain before/after shots or grade breakdowns because I find this technique is overrated and misrepresent the work of the DPs I work with. If you want to see breakdowns in which I show technical how-to you may have a look at my VIMEO feed and my website: www.ilovehue.net

For work inquiries, you can contact me via the contact form on my website too. I’m available for remote, local, on set and worldwide grading gigs.

Music: Gold Horizon – Premiumbeat.com

You can find information about the various projects included in my demo in my resume.

Short movies: Chrono (s)

Short movies: Chrono (s)

This is a project created in total freedom. Two short movies produced to show the talent of two young actors taking place in that same place at the same moment. One is a swimming coach, the other is a pro swimmer.

Both movies were shot on RED Epic by Alexandre Lampron and directed by JP Garoute who also signed the editing.

The color grading was done on ProRes 4444 files created in RedCine with RedLogFilm gamma. Everything was graded and exported as UDH masters in DaVinci Resolve 12. It was a great project to put the beta (yep, I was living on the edge) to the test.

There was a huge amount of daylight coming in almost every scene, expect for the shower scene. The blue dominance in the set helped to make it blend in. Skin tones had to be brought back but the 12bit nature of the media kept a lot of depth to make it possible. The final is very two-tone movie with a cold vibe to it. I’m quite please with the back and forth between the office and the locker room. There come out as different  but united in the same environment.

Music video: Crier tout bas by Coeur de Pirate

Music video: Crier tout bas by Coeur de Pirate

This is a color grading breakdown for “Crier tout bas”, the second single for the album ROSES by Coeur de Pirate.

It was shot on Alexa in 2K proves 4444 by Jessica Lee Gagné and directed by Kevin Calero for Romeo et Fils. The music video is now available on nowness.

Here is a color grading breakdown I did for some shots. Nothing technical but some clone tool effects to remove some unwanted pieces. I used Resolve’s key lock feature on some power windows and copied the content to fill the mask with another part of the image.

Music video: Philippe B “Nous irons jusqu’au soleil”

Music video: Philippe B “Nous irons jusqu’au soleil”

This is a nice music video I graded for Philippe B’s new single “Nous irons jusqu’au soleil”. It a nice piece featuring 10 dogs with theirvery own personality. The video that could, at first, relate to some other pieces like the popular “Island in the sun” by Weezer but goes beyond the cute animal cliche. There is a nice narrative touch in the edit and we understand the relation between the different dogs. We follow the hound from the deep bottom of a cavern to the freedom feel of the open wild. I suggest you watch until the last shot.

Web promo: abitibi&co canoe company

The two things I like very much in life are color grading and white river canoe. I like to alternate color grading and canoe sessions as often as possible. So when I was approached by abitibi&co, a new canoe manufacturer, for a grading gig on the beautifully shot images of their web promo, I obliged.

In total, I graded 14 pieces. The main one is a 80 second video in which we discover a group of paddlers through beautiful sceneries. They used that clip to illustrated their moto: Live beyond the bend.

I was happy they decided to publish the videos on VIMEO. The video hosting website is able to keep the very wide aspect ratio. Please watch them full screen! and share!

Music video: Blue Volvo by Loud Lary Ajust

Music video: Blue Volvo by Loud Lary Ajust

This is a nice little music video I worked on a couple weeks ago. Very low light result shot on Alexa. The deal was to stay as low key as possible while keeping come details.

The piece is part of Loud Lary Ajust‘ s latest album. It was shot in a day by DP Jessica Lee Gagné during a not so cold day of June so the team wasn’t freezing its a$$ in the water.

The footage was graded from scratch in DaVinci Resolve at my studio in July. It was a nice and quick gig. As the shots were captured across the day, water reflections and sky textures weren’t quite matching but some power windows here and there helped a lot.

Here are some before and after:
